A Reflection on the Redesign of Health and Social Care Services in Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross.

Having been involved in the local campaign against the redesign of health and social care services in Skye, Lochalsh and South West Ross since 2015, and with Sir Lewis Ritchie’s visits to the area coming to a close, this seems an appropriate juncture to take stock of how this redesign has played out. Since my submission to the petitions committee of the Scottish Parliament in 2016, which in essence was a critique of the service redesign’s core element of a centralised model of health care based on a unitary hospital in Broadford, there have been a number of key developments, including the publication of Sir Lewis’s report in 2018, the full commitment in 2018 of NHS Highland to that report and the situation today where NHSH have completely reneged on all of the key elements of that report as they relate to north Skye, confirmed at the final meeting with Sir Lewis Ritchie on the 20th of June with respect to urgent care. Clearly the Scottish Government have fully backed NHSH in what they have done in this area, despite political voices to the contrary, at great cost to the public purse of many millions of pounds with the costs to the North Skye community being considerably greater. The co-production process that the Scottish Government encouraged this community to be involved in with NHSH was clearly nothing short of an utter sham. It is for these and other reasons that I have written the attached paper which calls for a public inquiry into the redesign process, something that I hope can be undertaken sooner than later given the serious extant issues that have been created in the North Skye community by the Scottish Government and NHSH.
